Le 10 avril dernier, Fairyland faisait son grand retour sur scène, à l’Epic Fest, 16 ans après le dernier concert du groupe. Le lendemain, nous avons eu la chance de pouvoir échanger avec l’ensemble de ses membres, afin de recueillir leurs impressions sur cette grande première, mais également parler des projets à venir…

Comment vous sentez-vous après le concert d’hier ?
Archie : Oh, c’était incroyable.
JB : Ouais, vraiment bien. Très heureux d’être de retour.
Brieuc : Une expérience incroyable, et la réaction du public a été bouleversante. On a adoré.
Beaucoup de fans sont venus hier, et pour la plupart, c’était évidemment la première fois qu’ils vous voyaient en live. L’ambiance était vraiment excellente. Vous attendiez-vous à un accueil aussi chaleureux ?
Johannes : Je peux parler pour moi, car j’étais censé venir voir Fairyland en tant que spectateur à la base ! Je m’attendais à quelque chose, mais je pense que le public a largement dépassé mes attentes. Je ne pensais pas qu’il y aurait autant de monde, la zone était bondée, c’était impressionnant.
Willdric : De la première à la dernière chanson, c’était plein à craquer.
Johannes : C’était vraiment cool.
Archie : J’espérais une bonne réaction, mais pas à ce point. C’est fantastique.
L’Epic Fest, était votre premier concert depuis 16 ans. Comment se prépare-t-on pour un tel comeback ?
Réponse collective : Des répétitions, de la panique, des moments de rigolade et encore des répétitions. Et puis se dire : « Oh mon Dieu, il faut aussi répéter ce passage ! ». On espère juste que tout va bien se passer. Et c’est ce qui arrive.
Willdric : Et le plus dur a été pour toi Johannes, car tu as rejoint le groupe il y a seulement trois semaines ? Enfin, quatre semaines.
Johannes : Donc trois semaines pour tout apprendre !
Willdric : Un vrai baptême du feu. Incroyable.
Vu qu’on parle de toi Johannes, je trouve ça super que vous ayez un vrai claviériste sur scène. Beaucoup de groupes aujourd’hui ont des tonnes de claviers dans leurs albums mais ils passent des samples sur scènes… Alors que pour Fairyland, on a un vrai claviériste et un vrai bassiste. Ca change tout !
Johannes : Oui, c’est une tendance qui prend de l’ampleur, et j’ai l’impression que ça va dans la mauvaise direction. Je pense que, même si nous utilisons encore quelques samples (backing tracks), c’est un hybride. C’est un mélange de claviers et de chœurs en direct avec des éléments enregistrés.
D’ailleurs, il faut savoir que certains chœurs que l’on entend ont été enregistrés par Philippe (Philippe Giordana, co-fondateur du groupe, disparu en 2022). C’est comme s’il était là avec nous.
Willdric : Et merci à Archie, car c’est lui qui a dit : « Les gars, il nous faut un clavier sur scène, on ne peut pas faire sans… ». Donc merci, mec.
Johannes : Et je vous ai aussi convaincus, car j’ai dit que j’adorerais jouer, parce que je pense que Fairyland ne devrait pas jouer sans claviériste.
Archie : Pour une musique comme celle-ci, c’est central.
Quels souvenirs gardiez-vous du dernier concert de Fairyland ?
Willdric : Pour moi, c’était en Suède en juin 2003. Waouh, ça remonte à une éternité. On était si jeunes et… comment dire ? Pleins d’innocence. On ne s’attendait pas à s’arrêter si vite. On était au sommet de quelque chose, en route vers un projet vraiment grand. Ça montait en puissance, et puis tout s’est arrêté du jour au lendemain. On était comme dans un rêve. C’est comme si on avait découpé cette période pour la recoller aujourd’hui. J’ai l’impression que l’histoire reprend, tu vois ?
Pourquoi avoir choisi ce festival pour votre retour ? Et évidemment, est-ce qu’une date en France est envisageable ?
Willdric : Soren (l’organisateur de l’Epic Fest) voulait vraiment que Fairyland fasse son retour ici, donc nous sommes honorés de jouer ici pour notre premier concert.
Ils nous voulaient absolument, c’est comme ça qu’on a été contactés. Et c’était le bon moment, car l’album venait presque de sortir. C’était le timing parfait avec un nouveau line-up solide. Il a dit : « Je veux Fairyland ! ».
Archie : Être à ce festival est une expérience incroyable, que ce soit pour jouer ou simplement pour voir les autres groupes, l’ambiance est géniale. Ils s’occupent incroyablement bien des artistes, je suis vraiment reconnaissant d’être venu.
Johannes : Oui, pour le retour de Fairyland, il n’y a pas de meilleur festival, car c’est ici que tous les fans de Power Metal se réunissent. Pour un groupe de Power, c’est l’endroit idéal.
Archie : Et pour ce qui est de jouer bientôt en France, on l’espère vraiment !
Willdric : Oui. Mais si on lance quelque chose, on commencera par Nice, pour l’histoire, le lieu de naissance du groupe.
Au cours de votre carrière, vous avez souvent eu des changements de line-up, surtout au chant. Pourquoi est-ce si compliqué d’être le chanteur de Fairyland ?
Archie : C’est complexe. C’est exigeant à chanter, je trouve. Mais c’est une musique super plaisante à interpréter. Je l’aime beaucoup. Et je ne les laisserai pas se débarrasser de moi. Vous êtes coincés avec moi maintenant, les gars !
Willdric : Oui, mais c’est incroyable parce qu’il y a tellement de voix différentes sur chaque album, et tu arrives à toutes les chanter.
Archie : La plupart, en tout cas.
Avant toi, c’était Francesco Cavalieri, avec un style différent. Est-ce que tu cherches à t’éloigner de lui ou tu essaies juste d’imposer ton propre style ?
Archie : Je suis obligé de chanter avec ma propre voix. Francesco est un chanteur incroyable, mais avec des registres très différents. Je ne peux faire que ce que je sais faire.
Parlons du dernier album. En 2020, nous avions eu la chance d’interviewer Philippe pour la sortie d’Osyrhia. Il nous avait dit que l’écriture du prochain album était presque terminée. Est-ce que l’histoire est une continuation de ce que Philippe avait commencé ? Et si oui, comment avez-vous procédé pour terminer ce travail ?
Archie : C’est tout à fait ça. Nous avions déjà beaucoup de musiques et d’idées de Philippe. De nombreuses parties de chœurs enregistrées sont d’ailleurs avec sa propre voix, ce qui a été une expérience très surréaliste. Mais en ce sens, c’est une vraie suite, il est toujours avec nous dans cette musique.
Willdric : Environ 70 % ou 80 % de l’album était fait. Il manquait quelques morceaux pour le compléter, c’est pourquoi nous avons composé et ajouté de nouvelles choses de notre côté. Tout mis ensemble, je pense que ça fonctionne bien.
Ce qui est surprenant avec ce nouvel album, c’est votre capacité à garder une cohérence musicale et ce son si distinctif de Fairyland malgré les changements de line-up. Comment expliquez-vous cela ?
Willdric : J’ai travaillé avec lui pendant 27 ans. Je sais comment ça doit sonner en termes de production et tout ça. C’est presque mystique, car comme nous travaillions toujours ensemble, j’essaie de garder cette ambiance.
Archie : Je pense que c’est important car tous ceux qui sont impliqués dans Fairyland aiment avant tout la musique du groupe. On comprend tous l’esprit particulier de Fairyland, donc on arrive à le garder peu importe les nouveaux morceaux écrits.
Et comment décririez-vous le son de Fairyland ?
Johannes : Des modulations.
Willdric : Des changements de tonalité. Des parties orchestrales massives tout le temps. C’est rempli d’orchestrations en permanence. C’est comme un monde de sons et d’instruments.
JB : C’est très cinématographique. Et il y a les chœurs aussi.
The Story Remains est un album très varié. On y trouve des chansons courtes et d’autres plus longues et complexes. L’album a-t-il été conçu pour satisfaire les fans de longue date tout comme un nouveau public ?
Archie : On a dû trouver un équilibre entre les attentes des fans historiques et le nouvel environnement créatif suite au départ de Philippe. Évidemment, la force créative derrière la musique est différente puisqu’il n’est plus là pour apporter sa contribution habituelle. C’est un jeu d’équilibriste.
Quel était votre état d’esprit pendant l’écriture de l’album ?
Archie : J’ai passé un super moment. On était à Nice. On a bien bossé, quelques heures chaque matin.
Willdric : C’était assez simple.
Archie : Ça s’est fait très naturellement. On travaillait, puis l’après-midi, déjeuner, un peu d’édition, d’écriture… Et on recommençait le lendemain.
Comment envisagez-vous l’avenir de Fairyland ? Vous avez un nouvel album, un premier concert… j’espère que ça continuera longtemps, avec un line-up solide qui ne bougera plus.
Archie : Un line-up solide, plus de concerts, plus d’albums.
JB : C’est tout ce qu’on peut souhaiter au groupe.
Willdric : Oui. Et un nouvel album dès que possible.
Vous travaillez déjà sur ce nouvel album ?
Willdric : Ça commence.
Donc vous avez déjà des premières idées ?
Archie : Il faudra attendre pour le découvrir !
Aucun indice ? Rien ?
Johannes : Pour ma part, je suis nouveau dans le groupe. Très, très nouveau. Plus que tous les autres.
Willdric : Mais t’es qui toi déjà ? (Rires)
Johannes : Mais oui, je pense que le défi maintenant est d’écrire des choses qui satisferont les fans tout en perpétuant l’héritage de Philippe.
Qu’est-ce que tu penses pouvoir apporter à Fairyland ?
Johannes : Pour moi Philippe était une rockstar. Il comprenait si bien la musique de Fairyland. J’écoute le groupe depuis mes 18 ans, ça fait presque 15 ans. J’ai une immense admiration pour les arrangements orchestraux, les chœurs et la structure des morceaux.
D’un point de vue musical, je suis très inspiré et j’écris le même type de musique que Philippe, même si d’habitude pour mes autres groupes, c’est à une échelle plus simple. Pour Fairyland, ce sera un défi d’écrire dans la même veine que lui, mais j’ai vraiment hâte.
Willdric : Quelque chose va un peu changer : avant, on travaillait seulement à deux avec Phil pour tout. Mais tout le monde sera impliqué sur le prochain, donc ce sera un travail collectif vraiment intéressant. Chacun apportera quelque chose. J’ai vraiment hâte de voir ça.

FAIRYLAND : THE GREAT COMEBACK !
How are you feeling after yesterday’s concert?
Archie: Oh, it was incredible.
JB: Yeah, really good. So happy to be back.
Brieuc: An amazing experience, and the crowd’s reaction was overwhelming. We loved it.
Many fans showed up yesterday, and for most, it was obviously their first time seeing you live. The atmosphere was excellent. Did you expect such a warm welcome?
Johannes: I can speak for myself, because I was actually supposed to come see Fairyland as a spectator! I expected something, but I think the audience far exceeded my expectations. I didn’t think there would be so many people; the area was packed, it was impressive.
Willdric: From the first to the last song, it was full to bursting.
Johannes: It was really cool.
Archie: I was hoping for a good reaction, but not to this extent. It’s fantastic.
Epic Fest was your first concert in 16 years. How do you prepare for such a comeback?
Collective Response: Rehearsals, panic, moments of laughter, and more rehearsals. And then telling ourselves: « Oh my God, we need to practice this part too! ». We just hope everything goes well. And that’s exactly what’s happening.
Willdric: And the hardest part was for you, Johannes, because you joined the band only three weeks ago? Well, four weeks.
Johannes: So, three weeks to learn everything!
Willdric: A true baptism of fire. Incredible.
Since we’re talking about you, Johannes, I think it’s great that you have a real keyboardist on stage. Many bands today have tons of keyboards on their albums but use samples on stage… whereas with Fairyland, we have a real keyboardist and a real bassist. It changes everything!
Johannes: Yes, it’s a growing trend, and I feel like it’s heading in the wrong direction. I think that even if we still use some samples (backing tracks), it’s a hybrid. It’s a mix of live keyboards and live choirs with recorded elements. By the way, you should know that some of the choirs you hear were recorded by Philippe (Philippe Giordana, co-founder of the band, who passed away in 2022). It’s as if he were right there with us.
Willdric: And thanks to Archie, because he’s the one who said: « Guys, we need a keyboard on stage, we can’t do without it… ». So thanks, man.
Johannes: And I also convinced you guys, because I said I’d love to play, because I think Fairyland shouldn’t play without a keyboard player.
Archie: For music like this, it’s essential.
What memories did you have of Fairyland’s last concert?
Willdric: For me, it was in Sweden in June 2003. Wow, that was an eternity ago. We were so young and… how should I put it? Full of innocence. We didn’t expect to stop so soon. We were at the peak of something, on our way to a really big project. It was gaining momentum, and then everything stopped overnight. It was like a dream. It’s as if we cut out that period and pasted it into today. I feel like the story is starting up again, you know?
Why did you choose this festival for your return? And obviously, is a date in France possible?
Willdric: Soren (the organizer of Epic Fest) really wanted Fairyland to make their return here, so we are honored to play our first concert here. They absolutely wanted us; that’s how we were contacted. And it was the right time because the album had just been released. It was perfect timing with a solid new line-up. He said: « I want Fairyland! ».
Archie: Being at this festival is an amazing experience, whether for playing or just seeing the other bands; the atmosphere is great. They take incredible care of the artists; I’m really grateful to be here.
Johannes: Yes, for Fairyland’s return, there’s no better festival, because this is where all the Power Metal fans gather. For a Power band, it’s the ideal place.
Archie: And as for playing in France soon, we really hope so!
Willdric: Yes. But if we launch something, we’ll start with Nice—for the history, as it’s the birthplace of the band.
Throughout your career, you’ve often had line-up changes, especially with vocalists. Why is it so complicated to be the singer for Fairyland?
Archie: It’s complex. It’s demanding to sing, I find. But it’s such pleasant music to perform. I love it a lot. And I’m not letting them get rid of me. You’re stuck with me now, guys!
Willdric: Yes, but it’s incredible because there are so many different voices on each album, and you manage to sing them all.
Archie: Most of them, anyway.
Before you, it was Francesco Cavalieri, who has a different style. Are you trying to distance yourself from his style or just trying to impose your own?
Archie: I have to sing with my own voice. Francesco is an incredible singer, but with very different ranges. I can only do what I know how to do.
Let’s talk about the latest album. In 2020, we had the chance to interview Philippe for the release of Osyrhia. He told us that the writing for the next album was almost finished. Is the story a continuation of what Philippe started? And if so, how did you go about finishing this work?
Archie: That’s exactly it. We already had a lot of music and ideas from Philippe. Many of the recorded choir parts are actually in his own voice, which was a very surreal experience. But in that sense, it’s a true sequel; he is still with us in this music.
Willdric: About 70% or 80% of the album was done. A few tracks were missing to complete it, which is why we composed and added new things on our end. Put all together, I think it works well.
What is surprising about this new album is your ability to maintain musical consistency and that distinctive Fairyland sound despite the line-up changes. How do you explain that?
Willdric: I worked with him for 27 years. I know how it’s supposed to sound in terms of production and all that. It’s almost mystical because, since we always worked together, I try to keep that vibe alive.
Archie: I think it’s important because everyone involved in Fairyland loves the band’s music first and foremost. We all understand the unique spirit of Fairyland, so we manage to keep it regardless of the new tracks being written.
And how would you describe the « Fairyland sound »?
Johannes: Modulations.
Willdric: Key changes. Massive orchestral parts all the time. It’s constantly filled with orchestrations. It’s like a world of sounds and instruments.
JB: It’s very cinematic. And there are the choirs, too.
The Story Remains is a very varied album. There are short songs and others that are longer and more complex. Was the album designed to satisfy long-time fans as well as a new audience?
Archie: We had to find a balance between the expectations of long-time fans and the new creative environment following Philippe’s passing. Obviously, the creative force behind the music is different since he’s no longer here to provide his usual contribution. It’s a balancing act.
What was your mindset during the writing of the album?
Archie: I had a great time. We were in Nice. We worked well, a few hours every morning.
Willdric: It was quite simple.
Archie: It happened very naturally. We would work, then in the afternoon, lunch, a bit of editing, writing… And we’d start again the next day.
How do you see the future of Fairyland? You have a new album, a first concert… I hope it continues for a long time, with a solid line-up that won’t change anymore.
Archie: A solid line-up, more concerts, more albums.
JB: That’s all we can wish for the band.
Willdric: Yes. And a new album as soon as possible.
Are you already working on this new album?
Willdric: It’s starting.
So you already have some initial ideas?
Archie: You’ll have to wait to find out!
No clues? Nothing?
Johannes: For my part, I’m new to the band. Very, very new. More than anyone else.
Willdric: Wait, who are you again? (Laughter)
Johannes: But yes, I think the challenge now is to write things that will satisfy the fans while carrying on Philippe’s legacy.
What do you think you can bring to Fairyland?
Johannes: To me, Philippe was a rockstar. He understood Fairyland’s music so well. I’ve been listening to the band since I was 18—it’s been almost 15 years. I have immense admiration for the orchestral arrangements, the choirs, and the structure of the tracks. From a musical standpoint, I’m very inspired and I write the same type of music as Philippe, even if usually for my other bands, it’s on a simpler scale. For Fairyland, it will be a challenge to write in the same vein as him, but I’m really looking forward to it.
Willdric: Something is going to change slightly: before, Phil and I worked as a duo for everything. But everyone will be involved in the next one, so it will be a truly interesting collective effort. Everyone will bring something to the table. I’m really excited to see that.
