Dans le cadre de la sortie du quatorzième album « Dark Asylum », Thomas Youngblood, guitariste fondateur de Kamelot a accepté de réaliser une interview avec nous. Un grand merci à lui pour sa confiance et le temps qu’il nous a consacré pour répondre à nos questions !

Thème 1 : La conception de « Dark Asylum »
Comment a été conçu « Dark Asylum » ? Avez-vous rencontré des difficultés lors de sa conception ?
Cela doit toujours venir à temps. On fait partie de ce type de groupes qui composent en tournée.
On doit compartimenter n’importe quel aspect, et on le fait en une fois alors qu’on n’aime pas ça. On aime rester focaliser sur la tournée puis sur l’écriture de l’album.
Alors c’est le plus grand défi qu’on a juste à temps je mais on a commencé à travailler les chansons il y a deux ans. Après la dernière tournée de « The Awakening », on a immédiatement démarré la production de « Dark Asylum ».
En général, tu composes des nouvelles chansons après la tournée d’un album comme tu l’as dit pour « The Awakening » ?
Oui mais là c’est un peu différent. La plupart du temps on compose la musique. On ajoute les mélodies et la voix après les paroles.
C’est album est un album-concept. On doit garder certains paramètres précis quand viennent les paroles.
Alors ça change légèrement notre façon d’écrire les chansons et comment on monte les introductions de chaque chanson. On voulait créer une atmosphère cinématographique pour chacune d’entre elles.
Mais en général, la musique vient habituellement en première puis on ajoute les mélodies et les voix après les paroles.
On dirait qu’il y a une continuité entre ce dernier et « The Awakening ». Es-tu d’accord avec ça ?
Il n’y a pas de lien entre les albums mais la fatigue et notre santé mentale sont toujours en action, c’est quelque chose qui s’étend sur nous depuis des années en tant que compositeurs.
C’est juste une réflexion personnelle de notre style de vie. Les albums sont complètement différents au niveau de l’intrigue concernant l’approche de l’enregistrement.
Avec le dernier album je voulais être un peu plus gothique, revenir avec l’ambiance apportée par « Silverthorn » ou « Ghost Opera ». Aussi apporter des éléments Folk, de New age qu’on avait sur « Silverthorn » ou « The Fourth Legacy ». Alors c’est totalement différent de « The Awakening ».
Il y a tellement de guests sur cet album comme Tobias Sammet sur le titre « One Last Masquerade », ou le morceau « Beneath the Moon (Tunglið) » avec trois différents guests. Pourquoi avoir choisi tous ceux-là pour participer sur l’album ?
La partie la plus importante est logique. Avec Rannveig, on était en studio pour produire avec Sascha Paeth. Il a eu l’idée de les faire venir et chanter sur nos chansons.
J’avais mes idées qu’on a développées juste pour ça avec ma guitare.
Tobias Sammet était presque sur le mixage durant la dernière semaine. On lui a demandé s’il voulait chanter sur cette chanson et il a gracieusement accepté.
Ça s’est toujours passé différemment comme avec Clémentine de Visions Of Atlantis. On l’avait depuis le début de la production mais parfois ça se déroule naturellement et à la dernière minute puisque tout le monde est différent.
Comme le précédent, « Dark Asylum » peut nous rappeler des éléments de la période « Karma », « Epica » et « The Black Halo » avec Roy Khan. Qu’est-ce que tu en penses ?
Je ne pense vraiment pas qu’on puisse les associer.
Bien sûr il y a aussi des éléments plus modernes. Par exemple, le growl de Ignacia Fernández sur « Sanctuary ». Comment as-tu trouvé l’inspiration en général pour composer l’album ?
En général c’est juste nos goûts personnels. En tant que compositeurs on varie.
On peut revenir sur le premier album de Kamelot « Eternity ». Chaque chanson est différente.
On peut prendre une chanson d’un album et dire que ça correspond au groupe.
Alors c’est important de varier notre musique en tant que compositeurs et nos fans s’attendent toujours à ce que ce soit différent. Cela ne peut pas être uniquement un titre direct de Power Metal, ça devrait toujours être varié et avoir différents moods sur chaque chanson.
J’ai appris et grandi avec des groupes comme Queen, Led Zeppelin ou Iron Maiden et ils ont toujours différentes textures à travers leurs chansons.
Thème 2 : Le style Kamelot
En général, on considère Kamelot comme un groupe de Power Metal Symphonique. Es-tu d’accord avec ça ?
Evidemment je pense que les labels nous mettent dans certaines catégories mais je ne pense vraiment pas que Kamelot soit juste Symphonique, Power Metal ou Progressif.
Je sens peut-être qu’on rentre dans différentes boîtes qu’on ne peut pas vraiment définir.
La musique c’est de la musique et à mon avis quand on joue de la bonne musique, on ne doit pas fixer un label pour ça.
Bien sûr, Kamelot n’est pas juste du Power Metal, Symphonique ou Progressif… Il y a aussi des éléments de Rock. par exemple, la chanson « Ivy, My Dear » n’appartient à aucune de ces catégories.
Durant toute la carrière du groupe, il y a eu tellement de sonorités différentes sur chaque album. Comment trouves-tu l’inspiration en général ?
C’est important que l’équilibre qu’on a en tant que groupe entre les tournée et l’écriture soit centrale. Donc quand on a du temps off c’est pour créer et dépenser nos nouvelles idées.
On était en tournée tout le temps alors on s’assure d’avoir du temps off, on passe du temps avec nos familles et on se ressource. Chaque musicien recrée une sorte de nouvelle énergie et recharge ses batteries pour exploiter de nouvelles idées.
On n’est jamais à court d’inspiration. J’ai déjà en tête de nouvelles idées donc ça n’a jamais été un problème.
Je pense que ça dépend de comment on est en tant que personne, si on est créatif, si on cherche de nouvelles choses.
Et concernant les paroles comment tu trouves l’inspiration ?
Pour moi, « Dark Asylum » est une métaphore de notre esprit décrivant comment on peut être perdu ou comment on peut former ce présent pour nous.
Alors métaphoriquement parlant on touche beaucoup de sujets à propos d’une période sombre qu’on vivre durant notre vie, mais on a toujours la capacité d’en sortir si on s’accepte et si on a confiance en nous-mêmes.
C’est plus dans cette direction que va « Dark Asylum ». Il y a beaucoup de sujets mais à l’arrivée on retrouve la force d’avancer comme on retrouve notre propre sanctuaire.
En tant que guitariste quelles sont tes principales influences ?
Beaucoup de choses, pas seulement la guitare. J’ai grandi avec de la musique classique, de la New age et même du Jazz.
En tant que guitariste, Michael Schenker a été une influence. Comme Alex Lifeson de Rush et Yngwie Malmsteen qui était bien sûr une grande influence.
Concernant l’écriture, la guitare était là juste pour compléter pas juste pour jouer du shred. Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Queensrÿche… Ce sont aussi des groupes que j’adore avec lesquels j’ai grandi.
Savatage et Crimson Glory étaient aussi important quand j’étais ado. Ils m’ont inspiré à fonder Kamelot et penser à l’extérieur des Etats-Unis pour voir à travers l’Europe. Il y a une bonne partie de Kamelot inspirés par ces groupes qui ont connu un succès hors de Tampa.
Si tu devais choisir un ou deux (peut-être trois) albums de Kamelot pour définir le style du groupe. Lesquels choisirais-tu ?
C’est impossible de choisir, on a 14 albums. C’est aussi très subjectif.
Le nouvel album est très important car on croit en tous les nouveaux albums et c’est pourquoi on part en tournée. On joue 4 ou 5 chansons du nouvel album.
Je ne pourrais pas en choisir un mais le premier album « Eternity » était essentiel. Il y a eu différentes choses durant les années alors je pourrais juste choisir celui-là.
Es-tu fier et heureux de l’évolution du groupe depuis ses débuts ?
Être là depuis plus de 30 ans, voir les groupes grandir et jouer dans des plus grandes salles… Avoir une meilleure production est un rêve devenu réalité et avoir des fans incroyables aussi.
Thème 3 : Questions annexes
Je sais que Kamelot sera en tournée en novembre et il y aura deux concerts en France à Lyon et à Toulouse. Comment te sens-tu par rapport à la tournée ?
Lyon est devenu une de nos villes préférées lors de nos tournées européennes. Je ne sais pas pourquoi mais les concerts sont toujours incroyables.
Donc on attend avec impatience de revenir jouer. On jouera à Toulouse pour la deuxième fois aussi je pense.
C’est toujours un bon moment de revenir en France, rencontrer les fans ici. Pendant beaucoup d’années, on possède un fanclub basé en France alors on a une belle connexion avec les fans.
Y aura-t-il plus de concerts l’année prochaine ? Une seconde tournée ou autres ?
Oui ! On a parlé de l’équilibre d’être en tournée alors on aimerait faire 3 ou 4 semaines plus longues et revenir pour une autre tournée européenne, probablement en mars ou en avril l’année prochaine.
Alors il pourrait y avoir plus de concerts en France pour cette tournée où on irait en Scandinavie car on n’y va pas durant notre première tournée.
Il pourrait même y avoir une troisième tournée incluant la Grèce. On ira dans beaucoup de villes pour notre tournée « Dark Asylum » même en Chine.
Donc c’est un super moment pour le groupe.
Tu connais l’Epic Fest ? C’est un pur festival de Power Metal au Danemark. A mon avis ce serait une super occasion pour Kamelot de s’y reproduire.
Oui ! On nous a proposé de jouer là-bas l’an dernier mais on avait déjà des concerts à ce moment-là.
Je pense qu’on y fera attention en 2027 ou 2028 pour y jouer.
On a planifié beaucoup de festivals. Evidemment on aimerait jouer au Hellfest d’une certaine manière.
Un mot pour conclure l’interview ?
On aimerait remercier nos fans en France pour nous soutenir depuis tant d’années. C’est toujours un moment génial depuis la première fois qu’on a joué en France jusqu’à la dernière où on y était.
On attend avec impatience de voir tout le monde à nos concerts de la tournée « Dark Asylum ».

NEW ALBUM : INTERVIEW WITH KAMELOT
1st Theme: The conception of « Dark Asylum »
How was your new album « Dark Asylum » created? Did you meet some difficulties?
I mean it always has to come in time. We are that kind of band who write while we are touring.
You have to compartmentalize every aspect of what you do. And we do it in one time which we don’t like to do. We like to focus on a tour next focus on songwriting.
So it’s the biggest challenge I think we just have in time but we started to work on the songs two years ago. After the final tour for « The Awakening », we started working immediately on the production of « Dark Asylum ».
In general, do you write new songs after the album tour as you said for « The Awakening » ?
Yes but I mean it’s a kind of different. For the most part we write the music. We add melodies and vocals after words.
With this album it’s been a concept record. The certain parameters we have to stay in when comes the lyrical content.
So that changes a little bit the way the songs written and the way we set up is for the intros of the songs. We wanted to create a cinematic atmosphere for every song on here.
But in general, it’s usually the music first and we add the melodies and vocals after words.
It seems there is a continuity between this album and the previous one « The Awakening ». Do you agree with that?
There is not a relation between the albums but we touch a little self weariness or mental health which is something we dwelled on for many years as songwriters.
It’s just personal reflexion on lifestyle. The albums are completely different in storyline as the recording approach.
With the last album I wanted to be more gothic, bringing back the kind of vibes of « Silverthorn » or « Ghost Opera ». Also bringing back Folk elements, new age elements we had on « Silverthorn » or « The Fourth Legacy ». So it’s totally different from « The Awakening ».
There are so much guests on this album like Tobias Sammet on the title « One Last Masquerade », or the song « Beneath the Moon (Tunglið) » with three different guests. Why did you choose all of them to participate on the album?
The most part is very organic. With Rannveig, we were on the studio to perform and produce with Sascha Paeth. He had the idea making them come back and sing on the songs.
I had my idea we developed just for that with my guitar.
Tobias Sammet was almost on the last week mixing. We asked him if he wanted to sing on that song and he graciously accepted.
It always happened differently like with Clémentine from Visions Of Atlantis. We had her in mind from the beginning of the production but sometimes it just happens organically and last minute so everyone is different.
Like the previous one, « Dark Asylum » can remind us of the Roy Khan era with the trio « Karma », « Epica » and « The Black Halo » because of some fast songs. What do you think about it?
I don’t really think about it with those terms.
Of course there are some modern stuff in this album as well. For exemple, the growl by Ignacia Fernández on « Sanctuary ». How did you find inspiration in general to compose the album?
I mean it’s just in general our personal taste. As writers we have varied.
You can come back to the first Kamelot album « Eternity ». Every song is different.
You can pick one song on an album and say it represents the band.
So it’s important to have diversity on the music as writers and our fans expect things to be different. It’s not allowed to be one straight Power Metal song, it should always be diverse and have different moods on each song.
I learnt and grew up with bands like Queen, Led Zeppelin or Iron Maiden and they always have different textures to their songs.
2nd Theme: Kamelot’s style
In general, we consider Kamelot as a Symphonic Power Metal band. Do you agree with that?
I think the labels obvisously put us in a sort of category but i don’t really think Kamelot is just Symphonic, Power or Progressive Metal.
Maybe I feel like we fit into different boxes you can’t really define.
Music is music and I think when you play good music you don’t have to put a label for it.
For sure, Kamelot is not just Power Metal, Symphonic or Progressive… There are also elements of Rock. For exemple, the song « Ivy, My Dear » isn’t part of any of these categories.
During the whole career of the band, there has been so many varieties on each album. How do you find inspiration in general?
I think it’s important that the balance we have as a band between touring and songwriting is very major. So when we have time off to create and expend our mind for some new ideas.
We had touring all the time so now we make sure we have time off, we spend time with our families and we all create some new. Every musician creates new kind of energy and battery to make new music and have new ideas.
We have never run out of inspiration and new ideas. I already think of new ideas for the future now so it’s never been an issue.
I think it depends on how you are as a person, if you are creative, if you are searching for new things.
How do you find inspiration regarding the lyrics?
For me, « Dark Asylum » is a metaphor for our mind describing how we can get lost or how we can create this present for ourselves.
So we touch a lot of topics metaphorically about how you may have a dark period in your life, but you always have the ability to get out of it if you accept yourself and have confidence on yourself.
So it’s more the kind of direction for « Dark Asylum ». There’s a lot of dark topics but in the end of the day it’s about finding the power to find your own sanctuary.
What’s your main influences as a guitarist?
There’s a lot of different things, not only the guitar. I grew up with classical music, new age music and even Jazz.
As a guitar player, Michael Schenker was an influence. Also Alex Lifeson from Rush and Yngwie Malmsteen was of course a big influence.
For writing music, the guitar was more to complement the songs not just about shredding. Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Queensrÿche… They are also bands I grew with and I’m loving.
Savatage and Crimson Glory were also important when I was a teen. They inspired me to create Kamelot and think outside the U.S. to look to Europe. There’s a big side of Kamelot inspired by these bands who have success out of Tampa.
If you had to choose one or two (maybe three) albums of Kamelot to define the style of the band. Which ones would you choose?
That’s impossible to choose, we have 14 albums. It’s also very subjective.
The new album is very important because we believe in every new album and that’s why we tour. We play 4 or 5 songs from the new album.
I couldn’t pick one but the first album « Eternity » was crucial. There were different things during the years so I could just pick this one.
Are you both happy and proud of the evolution of the band since the beginning you’ve played?
To be here +30 years, see the band growing and playing in bigger venues… Having a bigger production is a dream come true and having amazing fans too.
3rd Theme: Side questions
I know Kamelot will be on tour in november and there will be two shows in France at Lyon and Toulouse. How are you excited about this?
Lyon has become one of our favorite cities on our early european tours. I don’t know what’s happening but the shows are always great.
So we’re looking forward to coming back and playing. We will play in Toulouse and I think it’s our second time.
It’s always a good time coming to France, meeting the fans there. For many years, we have a fanclub based in France so we have a lot of connexion with the fans.
Will there be more shows next year? A second tour or something else?
Yes! We’ve just talked about the balance of touring so we’d like to do 3 or 4 weeks long and come back to another european tour, probably in march or april next year.
So there might be more french shows added to that tour where we will go to Scandanavia because we’re not going to Scandinavia on the first tour.
There even might be a third tour including countries like Greece. There’s a lot of cities we will visit on the « Dark Asylum » tour including China.
So it’s an exciting time for the band.
Do you know the Epic Fest? It’s a pure Power Metal festival in Denmark. I think it will be great for you to play here.
Yes! We were offered to play there last year but we already had shows at that moment.
So I think it’s something we will be looking out in 2027 or 2028.
There’s a lot of festivals we will be planned very soon. Obviously we would like to play at the Hellfest in some points.
Something else to conclude?
We would like to thank our fans in France for supporting us over the many years. It’s always an amazing time from the first time we played in France to the last time we were there.
So we’re looking forward everybody to be at our shows for the « Dark Asylum » tour.
