Siegfried Samer, chanteur de Dragony depuis les débuts du groupe, a pu nous accorder une interview après le concert du groupe à l’Epic Fest 2026. L’occasion pour nous d’en savoir plus sur l’avenir du groupe et la sortie du futur album…

Quel est votre ressenti de jouer à l’Epic Fest ? Que penses-tu de ce festival ?
Je pense que c’est vraiment un festival fantastique car pendant des années il n’y a jamais vraiment eu un festival de Power Metal et autres style mélodiques proches.
Maintenant, il y a un beau mouvement en Europe et partout dans le monde qui remet le genre en avant.
L’Epic Fest est l’un des principaux lieux où il faut aller quand on est fan de ce style de musique ou quand on en joue car c’est le meilleur public ici.
On joue ici avec Dragony donc c’est parfait pour nous. C’est aussi notre premier concert au Danemark donc c’est une super expérience.
Des gens géniaux, une salle exceptionnelle, qu’est-ce qu’on peut ne pas aimer ?
Vous arrivez à presque 20 ans de carrière. Comment le vis-tu ?
C’est plutôt surprenant car en Autriche il n’y a pas eu beaucoup de groupes qui ont tenu aussi longtemps. Je pense qu’il n’y a qu’une poignée comme Visions Of Atlantis, Serenity, Edenbridge… Summoning et Belphegor qui ont probablement joué aussi longtemps.
Ensuite on connaît des groupes qui n’ont pas duré.
Pour quelques raisons, on réussit à prendre sur nous alors on a très hâte de célébrer cet anniversaire et on travaille sur quelque chose de spécial pour marquer le coup !
Il y a eu un dernier single nommé « Shadow and Flame » fin 2025. Est-ce le signe d’un nouvel album ?
Oui, c’est notre plan en ce moment ! On a sorti ce single pour quelque chose de spécial en 2025 et aussi pour compléter notre trilogie de chansons Dark Souls.
Bien sûr, on travaille maintenant de nouveaux morceaux pour notre nouvel album. Maintenant qu’on a notre nouvelle chanteuse Maria dans le groupe il y a quelques changements de nuances dans le groupe.
Alors on a plus d’opportunités au niveau de l’écriture et on verra où ça nous emmène.
Vos albums tournent autour de thématiques différentes. Qu’est-ce qui t’inspire au niveau de l’écriture ?
C’est toujours différent. Sur le dernier album, il y a eu des histoires alternées, aussi des topics tout comme sur « Viribus Unitis ».
Sur le nouvel album, on planifie quelque chose de différent. Ce sera plus focalisé sur du folklore. On pense à une nouvelle chose qu’on va explorer à travers l’album.
On accorde de l’importance à cette direction en ce moment et ça dépend comment ça va sonner pour l’annoncer. On verra quels types de thèmes on mettra dans les paroles.
Trouves-tu l’inspiration à travers la musique de jeux vidéo ? On se souvient du morceau « The Untold Story » pour Albion Online.
Tout à fait ! Je veux dire que beaucoup de chansons en sont inspirées, surtout sur le troisième album « Masters Of The Multiverse ». C’était inspiré par les livres, les films, les jeux vidéo et autres.
Pour le dernier album, il y avait moins ce type d’influences car c’était plus historique et il y avait des figures qu’on avait adaptées.
Pour le prochain, on trouvera toutes ces influences mais on cherchera de nouvelles idées comme j’ai dit. Peut-être que les jeux vidéo et les films reviendront.
Récemment, le groupe a accueilli Maria Nesh en guise de nouvelle chanteuse avec toi. Comment retrouvera-t-on ce nouveau duo à partir du prochain album ?
C’est exactement ce que j’ai dit un peu plus tôt. Cela nous apporte plus d’opportunités avec les deux styles de chant.
Maria peut aussi faire du growl et elle est très cool avec ça. Elle l’a fait sur un single nommé « The Dead’s Queen Race » sorti il y a quelques années. Elle chante en live des chansons de notre dernier album.
Ce sera intéressant et palpitant de voir où ce voyage musical nous emmènera et comment les chansons vont s’assembler. Il y aura un duo focalisé sur l’écriture je dirais.
Ce sera différent ce qu’on a fait avant mais bien entendu on gardera le style atypique et l’esprit de Dragony.
Quels groupes ont principalement inspiré Dragony ?
J’ai commencé à me plonger dans le Metal, surtout dans le Power Metal avec Hammerfall. Cela a toujours été une de mes principales influences.
Aussi, Edguy et Avantasia. Tobias Sammet est probablement mon compositeur préféré.
Je citerais aussi beaucoup de groupes de l’âge d’or du Power Metal à la fin des années 90 comme Rhapsody, Kamelot, Stratovarius ou Sonata Arctica…
Certainement, mes principales influences sont Hammerfall, Edguy, Avantasia et sûrement Virgin Steele qui est un de mes plaisirs coupables.
On qualifie principalement Dragony comme un groupe de Power Metal avec des éléments Symphonique proches d’Avantasia. Es-tu d’accord avec ça ?
Absolument ! Je pense que nos chansons ressemblent plus à des « chansons », avec un refrain et des mélodies.
On peut avoir quelques éléments Symphonique mais ce n’est pas pareil que Rhapsody ou Twilight Force qui ont des titres plus longs. Les parties orchestrales mettent juste en valeur les refrains et les mélodies en ce qui nous concerne.
Des groupes comme Rhapsody sont plus focalisés sur les orchestrations épiques. C’est ce qui fait la principale différence avec nous.
Il semble y avoir de plus en plus de groupes de Power Metal en Autriche entre vous Dragony, Serenity ou Visions Of Atlantis. Est-ce qu’il y a une grande vague de groupes dans le genre au sein du pays ?
Pas du tout ! Ces groupes sont des exceptions qui confirment la règle.
Visions Of Atlantis et Serenity sont des groupes qui tournent depuis longtemps.
Mais il n’y a pas de grand mouvement de Power Metal. Il y a quelques groupes underground. En Autriche, les groupes de Power Metal sont comparés à d’autres qui jouent du Death ou Black Metal, ou du Metalcore.
Donc je ne pense pas qu’il y ait de grand mouvement de Power Metal en Autriche malheureusement. Ce serait cool d’avoir plus de concerts où les groupes de Power Metal jouent ensemble. C’est ainsi.
D’où vient le nom de Dragony ?
Le groupe a démarré le projet en tant que Dragonslayer’s Project à cause de mon nom Siegfried. Siegfried le pourfendeur de dragons dans la mythologie allemande. Mais le nom était trop long et compliqué.
On avait besoin d’un nom plus court quand on a sorti notre premier album. On voulait un nom simple à mémoriser.
On a cherché quelques idées et Andreas Poppernitsch le premier guitariste est arrivé avec cette idée : « Tu sais ? On fait quelque chose d’un peu fun et fantastique. On est vraiment comme Dragony, hein ? » Au début c’était une blague mais on a aimé et on a décidé de le garder.
C’est Dragony depuis 2011.
Penses-tu que Dragony sera en tête d’affiche un jour ?
C’est un objectif je dirais car on n’est plus tellement underground depuis des années.
Je pense qu’avec Maria dans le groupe, on a plus d’opportunités de tournée car la plupart du temps mon travail me retenait de partir. Je pouvais pas être absent plus de 4, 5, 6 ou 7 fois.
Maintenant avec deux chanteurs, on va essayer de se construire un nom et de le mettre en avant.
Je ne pense pas qu’on sera headliner l’année prochaine mais on essaiera de faire une tournée plus longue comme on l’avait fait avec Ensiferum au début de l’année. C’était comme un pas en avant pour nous avec un mois de tournée et 25 concerts. C’était top. La foule nous a suivi et nous suivrait pour une tournée en headliner. Ce serait incroyable en tout cas.

Je souhaiterais dire merci encore à l’Epic Fest pour l’organisation qui garde le vrai esprit du Power Metal en vie. Aussi merci à tous les organisateurs qui vont dans cette direction en ce moment comme le Quest Fest au Royaume-Uni où on a joué en 2024.
On travaille sur un nouvel album qui sortira l’année prochaine. J’espère que je retrouverai l’Epic Fest et tous les festivals de ce style à travers le monde.

NEW ALBUM AND NEW DIRECTION : INTERVIEW WITH DRAGONY
How do you feel to be here at the Epic Fest? What do you think about the festival?
I think it’s a really fantastic festival because for many years there has not really been a kind of this festival for Melodic and Power Metal.
Now, there is a beautiful movement in Europe and all over the world to bring it back to the spotlights.
The Epic Fest is one of the main places to be when you’re fan of this kind of music or you play this kind of music because you’ve got the best audiance here.
We play here with Dragony so it’s perfect for us to be here. It’s also our first show in Danemark so it’s a great experience.
Fantastic people, great venue, what’s not to love ?
Dragony has been playing for about 20 years now. What’s your feeling of that?
It’s quite surpising because especially in Austria there are not so many bands who make it that long. I think there’s a handful of like Visions Of Atlantis, Serenity, Edenbridge… Summoning and Belphegor probably that have been around longer.
Then I think you know that some bands have to come and go.
For some reasons, we manage to hang around so we’re looking forward to be celebrating that anniversary and we’re working on a special treat of course!
There was a new single called « Shadow and Flame » at the end of the year 2025. Will there be a new album coming soon?
Yes, it’s the plan right now! We had that single out for something special in 2025 and also to complete our Dark Souls trilogies of songs.
Of course, now we are working on new material for a new album. Now we also have the new singer Maria in the band so there are changes of complexion a little bit.
So we have new more opportunities and we’ll see where the songwriting taxes.
The thematics of your albums are very different. How do you find inspiration for songwriting?
It’s always different. On the last album, there was alternate history, there were also topics on this one as well as « Viribus Unitis ».
On the new album, we’re planning something different. It will be more folklore focus. There is something we’re thinking about right now that we will explore.
It’s a direction we are valuing right now and depending how it sounds to announce. We will see what kind of themes we will have on the lyrics.
Do you find inspiration on video games’ music? We remember the song called « The Untold Story » for Albion Online.
That’s right! I mean on a lot of songs we had this kind of inspiration, especially on the third album « Masters Of The Multiverse ». It was really inspired by books, movies, video games and all that stuff.
For the last album, there were less those influences because it was more historical and there were figures we adapted.
For the new one, we will find many of these influences but we’re looking for new stuff like I said. Maybe, again video games and movies can be inspiration.
Recently, Maria Nesh joined the band as an additional singer with you. How do you imagine the future with this new duo on the next album?
That’s exactly I said earlier. It gives us more opportunities with two different singing styles.
Maria can also do extreme vocals and she’s very cool with that. She did it on a single a couple of years ago called « The Dead’s Queen Race ». She also sings live on songs from the last album.
It will be very exciting and interesting where this musical journey takes us and how the songs come together. There will be duet focused songwriting I would say.
It will be something different from our previous stuff but of course we will try to keep the typical Dragony style and spirit going.
Who are the main bands that inspired Dragony?
I got into Metal, especially Power Metal or everything Melodic with Hammerfall. That has always been one of my main influences.
Also, Edguy and Avantasia. Tobias Sammet is probably my favorite songwriter.
A lot of bands from those glory days of Power Metal at the end of the 90s like Rhapsody, Kamelot, Stratovarius or Sonata Arctica…
For sure, my main influences are Hammerfall, Edguy, Avantasia and probably Virgin Steele which is one of my secret pleasures.
Dragony is considered as a Power Metal band with Symphonic elements like Avantasia’s opera style. Do you agree with that?
Absolutely! I think our songs are a bit more like « songs », with choruses and melodies.
We can have some Symphonic elements but it’s not the same as Rhapsody or Twilight Force who have longer songs. The orchestra is just there to enhance choruses and melodies for us.
Bands like Rhapsody is more focused and the epic orchestra. That’s the main difference from us.
There are more and more Power Metal bands in Austria like yours, Serenity or Visions Of Atlantis. Is there a great movement of the genre into the country?
Not at all! These bands are the exception to the rule.
Visions Of Atlantis and Serenity are not new bands have been around for a long time.
But there is not a big movement of Power Metal. There are few bands on the underground. In Austria, Power Metal bands are compared to other Metal bands who play Death or Black Metal, or Metalcore.
So I think it’s not a movement in Austria unfortunately. That would be great to have more shows with Power Metal bands playing together. It is what it is.
What’s the origin of Dragony’s name?
The band started the project as Dragonslayer’s Project because of my name Siegfried. Siegfried the Dragonslayer in the german mythology. But the name was complicated and too long.
We needed something shorter when we released our first album. We wanted a name easy to remember.
We searched some ideas and Andreas Poppernitsch the first guitarist came up with his idea: « You know? We’re a little bit funny and a little bit fantasy stuff. We are really like Dragony, right? » The meaning of this was a joke but we liked it and decided to keep it.
It has been Dragony since 2011.
Do you think you will be headliner on a next tour?
That’s kind of a goal I would say because we’ve been less than an underground band over the years.
I think with Maria in the band, we have more opportunities of touring because a lot of time my job was keeping us for touring. I couldn’t be gone for 4, 5 6 or 7 times.
Now with two singers we have more options so we will try to build up the name and brand a bit.
I don’t think we will be headliner on next year but we will try to get on a bigger tour like we did with Ensiferum early this year. That was kind of big step up for us with one mounth tour with 25 shows. It was good. The crowd could follow us and then that would follow up on a headliner tour. It would be great.

I would like to say thank you again to the Epic Fest for the organization keeping the true and Power Metal spirit alive. Also for all the promoters who go to this direction right now like the Quest Fest in the U.K. where we played in 2024.
We’re working on a new album that will be out next year. I hope I will see all again at Epic Fest and all other festivals in the world.
